Antonio Panno: El Tatuaje
Antonio Panno escribe a peticion de Andrea Saemann sobre su performance «Quiero tatuarme esta experiencia» en el marco del proyecto «¿Qién esta donde?» en Villa Renata en Basilea, el domingo 30.04.2017.

Es el día de la inauguración de la muestra ¿Quién está dónde? en Villa Renata en Basilea, Suiza. En un momento de la misma, estaban pasando música y comienzo a bailar con Franziska Stern (dueña de Villa Renata y benefactora con el proyecto ¿Quién está dónde?) y Andrea Saemann (artista convocada para el proyecto ¿Quién está dónde?), esto hizo que Andrea me invitara a participar en su performance que se realizaría 2 días después, y consistiría que estaríamos bailando mientras comienza la performance. Acepté la invitación, (aunque jamás antes había realizado algún tipo de exhibición de este tipo, además resultaba para mí un desafío ya que siempre sufrí de pánico escénico). Mi tarea en la residencia en Villa Renata, fue de documentador del proyecto ¿Quién está dónde? por medio de imágenes y videos y colaboración con todos los artistas. El día de la performance Andrea además me propuso, si me prestaba para documentar la performance sin la cámara, solo mirar y luego escribir las imágenes que hubiera registrado con la cámara, describiendo esos eventos. (Acepte también este nuevo desafío). A pesar de no tener la experiencia de escribir algún tipo de nota o redacción y gracias a la ayuda de Mónica Giron (artista convocada para el proyecto ¿Quién está dónde?) la misma estará seguramente editada y traducida al inglés por Mónica.
1Llego el momento del inicio, y comenzamos a bailar (tuve que concentrarme, para que no me saliera mi pánico escénico y para mi sorpresa lo logre manejar) y pude comenzar a observar que el publico lentamente empezaba a prestarnos atención, mientras esto ocurría un espectador recién llegado se llevó la silla en la cual, como habíamos acordado de antemano con Andrea ese sería mi punto de vista de la performance, así que, a rescatar la silla, bailando por supuesto. En este punto ya se había logrado la atención del público, y ocupe mi lugar. Se sentía las expectativas de saber que era lo que iba a suceder, Andrea comenzó a explicar (tengo que aclarar, que mis conocimientos de inglés son muy básicos por lo tanto lo que a continuación relato es una interpretación más bien gestual y emocionalmente empática, y con algunas frases reconocidas por mí, desde mi básico ingles) a cerca del pedido que me hizo, de ser documentador sin cámara. Parte del público me miraba con curiosidad, supongo por el hecho de documentar sin cámara. Andrea continuo con su relato y continuo avanzando en su tema eje de la performance El Tatuaje, (este tipo de expresión artística le impacto de sobremanera a Andrea desde que comenzó este proyecto, al conocer a Julim Rosa (artista convocada para el proyecto ¿Quién está dónde?) y una de sus formas de expresarse en el arte es atreves del tatuaje), y largas charlas con Julim, investigaciones en la web, comentarios con los otros artistas, dio el pie para la realización de esta performance.
2Andrea continúo hablándole al público, y este estaba cada vez más interesado en escuchar lo que tenía para decir. Ella comentaba y se hacía preguntas sobre el hecho de tatuarse, cuál sería la razón para realizarse un tatuaje, portarlo y exhibirlo. En mi observación percibí que gran parte del público se encontraba empatizada con estas preguntas que se hacía Andrea, y algunas personas tenían reacciones, como que esas preguntas ya tenían para ellos su respuesta.
3Andrea siguió avanzando en sus cuestionamientos y curiosidad con el tatuaje y convoco a Fränzi Madörin (colega en el arte de las performance, y además cantante e integrante de la banda Les Reines Prochaines, que integra desde 1988, que está integrada por artistas visuales, músicos). Observe claramente que gran parte del público reaccionan positivamente, como si ya la conocieran, y ella comenzó a contar su historia con un estilo parecido al Stand Up que se ve en Argentina. Su historia era acerca obviamente del tatuaje, su tatuaje, fue contando todo su derrotero, creando situaciones muy divertidas para el público que acompañaba todo el tiempo con sus risas y carcajadas, al punto tal que algunas personas estaban al borde de las lágrimas. Lo que resultaba no solo por la forma de contar la historia a cerca del deseo por años de tener su tatuaje, así como el dibujo debía ser una aspiradora, y los porque tenía que ser una aspiradora. (Lo que no logre entender, aunque gran parte del público lo festejo con mucha risa, el momento que se saca una dentadura postiza, y la guarda en la cartera, que le había realizado el dentista para que no se vea su propia dentadura deforme). Fränzi al conocer a Julim, unos días antes, encontró lo que estaba buscando desde hacía mucho tiempo, quien le dibujara y realizara el tatuaje. La aspiradora ocupando todo el brazo de Fränzi, que Julim realizo unas horas antes de la performance, y allí estábamos todos observando ese enorme tatuaje de aspiradora en el brazo, y observe como gran parte del público estaban azorados de este acontecimiento. (aclaro que los hechos que se sucedían, no estaban en mi conocimiento previamente)
4Fränzi saluda, y Andrea continua su charla a cerca del tatuaje, y haciéndose más preguntas acerca del mismo. En mi observación el público comienza a salir de ese estado de hilaridad, pasando a un tono más reflexivo, como consecuencia del relato de Andrea, que empezó a cerca de un sueño, que había tenido Monika Dillier (gestora, organizadora y curadora del proyecto ¿Quién está dónde?), el sueño en pocas palabras era de una casa que se incendiaba, y Andrea comenta a cerca de las casualidades, entorno a la performance, ya que Julim (que era parte de esta performance), había preparado para tatuarse a sí misma, en público, un dibujo completo, que era una casa en llamas. Mientras Andrea estaba finalizando estos comentarios, Julim comenzó a preparar sus elementos para tatuarse.
5En ese momento me levanto y me coloco alado de Julim lo más cercano a su pierna (donde ella decidió que iría su nuevo tatuaje). Ella había comenzado a preparar sus herramientas y elementos para realizar el tatuaje, el público lentamente se concentró en este proceso de comenzar a dibujarse el tatuaje. A partir de ese inicio, comencé a experimentar algo que por primera vez vivenciaba, y tratare de ser lo más claro posible ya que se basa en puras sensaciones internas a niveles muy profundo y no fáciles de describir. Por un lado, el silencio iba ganando a la gran mayoría del público, y cuando digo silencio me refiero a un silencio de pensamiento, solo observar de una forma casi atávica, como cuando un grupo de personas se sienta alrededor de la hoguera y observa las llamas de manera hipnótica. En tanto Julim trabajaba su respiración en forma ordenada y concentrada doblemente, para poder realizar su dibujo exactamente como ella pretendía, se hacía escuchar en toda la sala. Su mano por momentos temblorosa por la exigencia de la mala postura que le produce el tatuarse a si misma, pero con perfecta precisión sobre el dibujo. A medida que Julim avanzaba con su dibujo, comienza a verse una casa en llamas, es allí donde percibo estas miradas hipnóticas en el proceso del tatuaje, lo mismo que cuando miramos las llamas de fuego, nos aparecen pensamiento, preguntas, cuestiones, y quizás también respuestas. Es como un estado meditativo. En Julim percibo cuando el dibujo ya está bastante avanzado un nuevo tipo de temblor, más sutil como si viniera de su lado más inconsciente, que no llega a ser percibido por ella, dándome la sensación de que es el propio diseño del dibujo el responsable, y en él, ella expreso su resiliencia. Ya sobre el final del tatto, hay en el publico una distensión de esta experiencia, comenzando a comentar esta vivencia.
6Nos levantamos del lugar Andrea y yo, comenzando a bailar nuevamente como final de la performance.

It is the opening day for the Who is where? exhibition at Villa Renata in Basel Switzerland. Music is playing and suddenly I start to dance with Franziska Stern – Villa Renata’s owner and benefactor of the artist project Who is where? – and with Andrea Saemann, one of the twelve artists involved in the project. This little dancing action, inspired Andrea to invite me to dance with her during the performance she was going to do two days later during the show. I accepted the invitation although I had never done something like this before. So the proposition resulted in a challenge, because I have always suffered from stage fright. My responsibility during the project at Villa Renata was to create a camera based – photo and video – documentation of the collaboration project, for and with all the artists and participants involved. Andrea later asked me, whether I would agree to also document the performance by only describing it in writing. To describe what I had experienced or seen during the performance: I should observe and afterwards describe the images that I would have registered, I should recount the events taking place. I also accepted this new challenge even though I do not have experience in the narrative field either. I am counting on help from Mónica Giron, artist also invited to the Who is where? project, hoping she will edit and translate into English as well.
1The performance starts and we begin to dance (I had to concentrate so that my scene freight would not take over, and to my surprise I was able to control it). I was able to observe that the public was slowly starting to pay attention to us. While this was happening a recently arrived spectator took away the chair I was supposed to use as a special register point of view. In order to reposition the chair for the performance, we had to recuperate it, and set it back into position while still dancing. I then occupied my place on the chair. I could feel the expectations of what was about to happen. Andrea started to explain about how she had asked me to keep record of the performance without a camera: (I must here let you know that my knowledge of English is sort of basic, so my narrative is based not only on phrases which I could fully or mostly recognize, but also on an emphatic emotional and gesture based understanding of the situation). I was looked at with curiosity by part of the present public, I imagine that was because of the fact of doing a documentation with no camera. Andrea continued her speech about tattoos, the foundation theme of the performance. Tattoos as a form of art had struck and moved Andrea since the beginning of Who is where?while meeting Julim Rosa – artist invited in the project as well – who is dedicated to tattooing as part of her artistic creation. Andrea talked about her long and intense conversations with Julim, about her research on Tattoos online, and about commentaries that had risen while talking to other artists as well, and the performance was by then full blast.
2Andrea continued to speak to the audience, who were increasingly interested in hearing what she had to say. She commented and wondered about tattooing, what would be the reason for getting a tattoo, carrying it and displaying it. In my observation, I perceived that a large part of the audience was sympathetic to these questions that Andrea asked herself, and some people had reactions, as if those questions already had the answer for them.
3Andrea continued talking and describing her curiosity about tattoos, and asked Fränzi Madörin to step in – Fränzi is her colleague in the art of performance and also part of the Basel based music and art performance group Les Reines Prochaines since 1988. I could clearly observe that most of the public recognized and or knew Fränzi from before. Fränzi tells her story with a style which in Argentina we would associated to a stand up. Her story was obviously about tattoo, her tattoo. She tolds us all about it while creating hilarious situations for the public that accompanied her remarks with burst of laughter and even for some to the extreme of laughing to tears. This was the result not only of the way she was telling her story, and about her desire to have a tattoo, but also to fact that the tattoo she desired, was a vacuum cleaner. It was also about why it had to be a vacuum cleaner. (At a given moment I did not quite understand her narrative about what was going on – although the public was laughing like crazy: when Fränzi took of her false teeth set, out of her mouth and puts it away in a little pouch and then in her handbag, the dentist had prepared it for her to cover her irregular front teeth). When Fränzi met Julim some days before she found what she had been searching for, for years: she found someone who wished to realize her life time desire to draw and do the tattoo. And there it was, the VACUUM CLEANER, occupying most of Fränzi’s arm after Julim had done it some hours previous to the performance. And there we sat; all of us staring at it, the enormous VACUUM CLEANER TATTOO on the arm. I observed how most of the public was completely bewildered by the event. I must let you know that all these successions of happenings and events where previously unknown to me.
4Fränzi finishes her presentation and Andrea goes on with her speech opening new questions about tattoo. From my observation stand I understand that the public is starting to get out of the hilarious mood and setting into a more serious and reflexive tone as a consequence of the shift of the ongoing narrative. Andrea started describing a nightmare that Monika Dillier had the previous night – Monika is creator, coordinator and co-curator of the project Who is where?. In few words the nightmare is about a burning house, and Andrea was reflecting on the facts of chance, and about the performance, and about how Julim Rosa, who is also part of the performance, had decided to tattoo herself in public, live, a full drawing of a house on flames. While Andrea is finishing her narrative, Julim is preparing her tattoo kit on scene.
5I then get up and get near to Julim, I get as close as possible to her leg: as close as possible to the place in the leg where Julim has decided that the new tattoo is going to be set. Julim has begun to prepare her tools and elements in order to realize the tattoo. The public has slowly started to concentrate on the process of the new drawing. From then onwards I started experimenting something new, something that for the first time in my life I was experiencing. I will try to be as faithful as possible to the very deep imbedded inner feelings while describing, feelings which are not so easy to write out. Most of the present public was taken over by silence. When I say silence, I mean a silence of thought. Like an ancestral meeting around the fireplace, where the group is hypnotically conjured by the flickering flames. In the meantime, Julim worked on the tattoo: in order to achieve the drawing exactly as she wished, she controlled and organized her breathing, and her rhythm overpowered the hall. Her hand trembled now and then, as she advanced the drawing with precision; mostly due to the difficult posture she had to take in order to create the drawing on that specific part of her own body. As Julim advances with the drawing, a house on fire starts appearing, it is only then that I perceive the hypnotic look during the tattoo process. Same as when we look at the fire, thoughts and questions appear, maybe also answers. It is like some kind of in meditation state. I perceive a new sort of tremor in Julim, very subtle, like if it came from the depth of her unconscious side, like she does not perceive it, I have the feeling that it is responsibility of the design of the drawing itself. Like if the drawing is putting forwards her resilience. By the end of the tattoo, the public begins to relax, begins to talk and comment on the experience.
6Andrea and I get up and start dancing again. The performance is over.
